Get Involved with Oregon Youth Corps

Oregon Youth Corps connects youth with their local community through a variety of environmentally related service-learning projects for credit recovery, paid, and intern work experiences throughout Douglas County. Our students work with a range of partners within the community including, but not limited to: Bureau of Land Management (BLM), US Forest Service, the City of Roseburg, and Cow Creek Band Umpqua Tribes of Indians.

Our Summer Oregon Youth Conservation Corps Program provides an opportunity for local high school and college students of any skill level to work on improving public lands. Our focus is to challenge crew members’ work ethic, expand their job skills, and educate about forestry and natural resources career paths. All youth ages 16-26 are eligible for these positions.  All positions are defined as seasonal on-the-job training and therefore are not eligible for benefits.

OYC Recreation Crew Member (Campground & Trail Maintenance):   Click Here for the position description.

Recruiting 16 positions, compensation of $14.20-$16.00/hour  (16 to 24 years of age).

  • Spend 6 consecutive weeks of the summer working on activities ranging from trail and campground maintenance to promoting ecological restoration via invasive species removal. Activities focus on entry-level skill development regarding the safe use of hand-tools such as a shovel, loppers, rake, rogue hoe, Mcleod, Pulaski, hand saws, and mechanized tools such as weed eaters, pole saws, and leaf blowers.
  • BLM Crews meet at Phoenix Charter School each morning at 5:45 am (departing town at 6:00 am), project sites will vary throughout the Umpqua Basin on public lands administered by USFS and BLM partners. Most daily work sites are remote and lack cell-service.

Recruiting 3 positions, compensation of $14.20/hour (16 to 24 years of age).

  • Spend 6 consecutive weeks of the summer working on activities ranging from trail maintenance in remote wilderness areas, fuels reduction for wildfire prevention in the wildland-urban-interface, and to promoting ecological restoration via invasive species removal. Activities focus on entry-level skill development regarding the safe use of hand-tools such as a crosscut saw, shovel, loppers, rake, rogue hoe, Mcleod, Pulaski, hand saw, and mechanized tools such as a string line trimmer and pole saw.
  • Tiller Crew meets at convenient pick-up locations (TBD) in South County to carpool in the crew van to the Tiller Ranger District Office each morning by 7:00 am (departing town by 6:00 am). Project sites vary throughout the Tiller Ranger District. Most daily work sites are remote and lack cell-service.
  • A multi-day camping/backpacking trip may be required (equipment available for borrowing).

Recruiting 8 positions, compensation of $16-17/hour (16 to 26 years of age).

  • Spend 6 consecutive weeks of the summer working on forest health activities focused on noxious weeds removal for ecological restoration. Activities focus on entry-level skill development regarding the safe use of hand-tools such as a weed wrenches, loppers, rake, rogue hoe, Mcleod, hand saws, and mechanized tools such as string-line trimmers and brush cutters and will practice plant identification.
  • The botany crew will meet at Phoenix Charter School each morning at 5:45 am (departing town at 6:00 am), project sites will vary throughout the Umpqua Basin on public lands administered by USFS and BLM partners. Most daily work sites are remote and lack cell-service.
  • A multi-day camping/backpacking trip may be required (equipment available for borrowing).

OCC Forest Health Technician (Sugar Pine Monitoring) Click Here for the position description.

Recruiting 2 positions, compensation of $16-17/hour (16 to 26 years of age).

  • Spend 3 consecutive weeks during late-spring/early summer working on forest health activities focused on legacy sugar pine monitoring. College-level coursework and/or work experience related to tree and shrub identification, field botany, vegetation sampling, and forest surveying is preferred.
  • The Tech Crew will meet at Phoenix Charter School each morning at 6:45 am (departing town at 7:00 am), project sites will vary throughout the Umpqua Basin on public lands administered by USFS and BLM partners. Most daily work sites are remote and lack cell-service.

BLM Recreation Intern (Campground & Trail Maintenance):     Click Here for the position description.

Recruiting 2 positions, compensation of $16.00/hour (16 to 26 years of age).

  • Spend 16 consecutive weeks of the summer working on activities ranging from trail and campground maintenance to promoting ecological restoration via invasive species removal. Activities focus on entry-level skill development regarding the safe use of hand-tools such as a shovel, loppers, rake, rogue hoe, Mcleod, Pulaski, hand saws, and mechanized tools such as weed eaters, pole saws, and leaf blowers.
  • Interns report directly to the Bureau of Land Management, Roseburg District Office each morning and will receive on-the-job training by agency specialists to further skill sets in forestry and natural resources
  • Upon completion of the projects 640 hours of service, interns will receive the Public Lands Corps (PLC) non-competitive hiring status for competitive service positions in the Department of the Interior (DOI).

Recruiting 4 positions, compensation of $16-19.00/hour.

  • Spend 6 consecutive weeks of the summer working alongside crew leaders and coordinators in the field helping to mentor youth and support program activities relating to public lands stewardship, career exploration, safety, team-building activities, camp organization, supply inventory/stocking, data entry.
  • Position is based at Phoenix School in Roseburg, OR. Project sites determined by program partners.
  • Crew Leader Assistants are required to have current CPR or Wilderness First Aid certification.
