Our Summer Conservation Corps Program provides an opportunity for youth from any school and with any skill level to enjoy the summer working outdoors. Our focus is to challenge their work ethic, expand their job skills, and allow for steady summer employment. All Douglas County residents are eligible for these positions.

Umpqua National Forest Tech Crews

  • Compensation $9.50/hour ($10.00/hour effective July 1, 2017).
  • Crews comprised of six youth, 17 to 24 years of age.
  • Near full-time employment for seven consecutive weeks working outdoor USFS field survey techniques practiced by agency scientists. Activities range from pre-restoration assessments, timber stand examinations, botanical surveys, and backcountry surveys. Activities include GIS related data collection techniques and overnight trips into USFS Wilderness Areas.

Roseburg BLM Tech Crew

  • Compensation $9.50/hour ($10.00/hour effective July 1, 2017).
  • Crew comprised of six youth, 16 to 20 years of age.
  • Near full-time employment for seven consecutive weeks exploring BLM field survey techniques practiced by agency scientists. Field season includes invasive weed surveys, downed wood surveys, stream cross-section surveys, and salmonid snorkel surveys.

Crew members have the prospect to earn college credit from Umpqua Community College (UCC). Both crews have some suggested prerequisite course work prior to service. All related coursework is available during the Spring Term 2017 at UCC. Related tuition costs are eligible for waivers authorized by Phoenix School for UCC. Also, scholarships for associated course fees are available from our program partner; Umpqua Watersheds.  

Crew members are required to have current CPR certification (On-site training available). All crew members will be required to attend an orientation TBA in the late afternoon of early June 2017. Transportation each morning to Phoenix School, where crews reports daily, will not be provided and is the responsibility of every crew member.

  • Review the position description for eligibility requirements for the crews.
  • Applications must be e-mailed to by Monday, February 27, 2017.
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be fully considered.
  • Applicants are encouraged to provide a resume and/or a letter of recommendation.
  • We will contact you to schedule an interview. Interviews will be held the week of February 6th.
  • All applicants will be subject to drug screening at the time of interview.
  • Tech crew rosters will be announced by Monday, March 6, 2017.
